  1. When they took my profile pic they lost my loyalty forever… onward to a balanced diet of language learning apps

  2. I’m not sure why Duo removed pictorial profile avatars, but I hope they add that feature back:C.
(I’m not too fond of customizing avatars and like my silly profile pictures because they mean something to me. I don’t like having a person staring at me when I’m on my profile)

  3. Is there any way to change it back to a letter at least? People who previously had pictures now have letters but I’m stuck with this stupid ass ugly avatar. Is there anyway to even turn it to the letter?

    • Hi, joe
I completely agree with you – our profile pictures looked much better than these avatars. Unfortunately, there is no way to change it back to a picture or even just letters.

  4. I hope our real pictures on duolingo be back the idea of avatars just makes all the same. We are unique with unique language identities as language learners let us be real and genuine. If a pic is not morally good then put restrictions and don’t refuse all profile pics at the same time

      • And, one last thing. To add insult to injury, the avatars we’re now being forced to use, make us look like CHILDREN…. Which is really just kind of creepy–I have no words.

      • I’m sure it’s not your fault. I can’t help but notice that you have a photo and NOT an avatar. Why is that? Does DuoLingo believe that it would help things feel more personal when you respond to our posts? Or, I might guess that maybe they want us to feel like we can trust you and trust that you’re not some kind of AI or bot–or are you?

That’s my point. Why does DuoLingo force avatars on paying customers? Especially when they, themselves believe that photos make things more personal.

    • I agree. If it’s a safety thing for minors, just handle it like that and use an ‘over 18’ setting (based on your birthdate or something) to govern it.

I think the avatars are terrible. They don’t even look good and I don’t understand the logic behind removing the ability to use them. the avatars make things seem LESS PERSONAL. (*The only appropriate ‘mandatory’ use may be when they weave your avatars into the lessons, which is cool; other than that, they shouldn’t force the avatar on your ‘outward identity.’)

@DuoLingo – Why? This goes against the purpose of Language. Language is about identity, culture, and connection. And therefore learning another language in many ways, is PERSONAL…. It’s about growing _who_you_are_ by connecting across cultures to others who share that same desire. Seeing each other helps us identify with each other, and even if we don’t actually talk to each other, seeing each other’s photos really adds a dimension of bonding with other participants you see regularly.

  5. I agree completely! I loved having my picture there! I don’t like building a silly avatar, especially as a paid customer. Maybe that’s a feature they could provide for paying customers (not children). I could understand that parents would be nervous about having their kids’ pictures in an app. As a grown-up, I’d like my picture or a pet picture or something personal. We should have the choice, especially as paying customers…
